Buenos Aires
Editor’s Note: Virtual Gypsy interviewed fellow Virtual Gypsy, Julian Sula, CEO of Hostwire.com and 4fx.com, about his trip to Buenos Aires in December 2008.
ARGENTINA from Julian S. on Vimeo.
JS: Argentina is very European, it’s not like a Latin country. You go there, and the moment that you land, you will see the difference - it’s not like, say, Colombia. The architecture is very French, Italian because the designer of the Eiffel Tower, Gustave Eiffel, designed a lot of the city and it carries a lot of the French style. There’s different areas of Buenos Aires that carry that look. Barrio Parque is where the foreign embassies are located. The buildings there are all different, like villas. If you go to Palermo Hollywood, it’s more old buildings. One thing you notice is a lot of graffiti, I don’t know why they graffiti everything there.
Virtual Gypsy: What kind of graffiti did you see?
JS: Just words…like Pablo is crazy about this girl…a lot of ridiculous teenager stuff…
Virtual Gypsy: Nothing political?
JS: Political? I think, some? I didn’t notice anything political, but I saw Bart Simpson on the side of the building. They all love The Simpsons.
Virtual Gypsy: Does it translate well?
JS: It’s all dubbed.
Virtual Gypsy: I saw it in Nicaragua and it didn’t translate well. It’s American humor, you have to live here to get it.
JS: The food is amazing, it’s all organic.
Virtual Gypsy: Was it cheap?
JS: For us it’s cheap, for them it’s not. Most restaurants have deals, where you get an appetizer, main course, dessert and coffee for like 45 pesos, which is about $12. The Palermo Viejo neighborhood was really good and a little more high-end, it’s well-known, it’s amazing. I had salmon at one restaurant and it was like 45 pesos, but it’s worth it. For a typical Argentinian, they can afford to go out twice a week. If you’re a foreigner…
Virtual Gypsy: Did you guys cook in the apartment?
JS: I cooked twice - made some pasta because I was craving it - with mushrooms and onions.
Virtual Gypsy: Did you get it at a market? Like an outside market or a supermarket?
JS: They have a supermarket - the biggest one is called Coto - they’re everywhere and have everything. From our perspective, it’s pretty affordable. Argentineans complain because there’s a lot of inflation. Since the last time I was there prices went up at least 30%. If I were buying a juice, it was $1 and now it’s $4…well, maybe more!
Virtual Gypsy: Yeah, that’s more than 30%.
JS: But on average…this is specific for drinks.
Virtual Gypsy: Their economy crashed a few years ago, I remember…
JS: They pegged the peso to the US dollar, one to one, and that’s what messed them up. In 2000, they brought the currency to the same strength of the American dollar, so one peso equals one American dollar. That made all goods expensive. So a lot of American businesses stopped buying. They also had a bank run, and a lot of people couldn’t withdraw money. There’s a movie that touches on it called Nueve Reinas/Nine Queens.
Virtual Gypsy: Yeah, I saw that one…with the two guys…
JS: The guy gets taken for a bunch of money…
Virtual Gypsy: Yeah, it was really good.
JS: It shows that time period where people couldn’t withdraw money from the banks.
Virtual Gypsy: And then a lot of people came to Miami. How many times have you been to Argentina?
JS: Twice.
Virtual Gypsy: Will you go back?
JS: My dream is to ship my motorcycle there and do a tour all the way down to the tip, but it’s very far and very cold. You can see whales and all kinds of craziness.
Virtual Gypsy: Have you heard of people taking motorcycles there? Is it an Interstate or a two-way road?
JS: Yeah, but you can take it off road, take a GPS and just cruise.
Virtual Gypsy: Would you go by yourself?
JS: I know a guy who would go with me - at this point it’s just a dream.
Virtual Gypsy: What would stop you?
JS: Certain responsibilities that I still have here. The downturn of the economy – I can’t just leave and I have to work a little harder because things are tougher now.
Virtual Gypsy: Since you’re a Virtual Gypsy, did you continue working while you were in Argentina ?
JS: No. Just relaxing. Indulged in food, walking a lot. We also went to Pinamar, a beach town about 5 hours by bus.
Virtual Gypsy: What kind of bus? I’m imagining the school buses in Nicaragua…
JS: No, they have these comfortable buses you take from the center of the city. Buses are the favored means of transportation. To fly is very expensive. The buses are two-story.
Virtual Gypsy: And they crank the A/C.
JS: Yeah, but they give you blankets.
Virtual Gypsy: Isn’t that silly? I used to hate that! And are the roads very windy.
JS: No.
Virtual Gypsy: I threw up on one once.
JS: I’ve been to Bolivia, and you look down and it’s 1,000 feet drop. Buenos Aires is flatter.
Virtual Gypsy: So, the beach town?
JS: The ocean is dark, like brown, like a river.
Virtual Gypsy: Like up north, in Maine. It’s not inviting.
JS: The sand is brown and very fine. It looks like mud. In that aspect…I appreciate Miami.
Virtual Gypsy: I heard that’s why people from Buenos Aires go to Brazil if they want to go to the beach. Have you been to Brazil?
JS: No, I’d like to go. I’ve been to Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Bolivia…and Argentina.
Virtual Gypsy: Did you do any painting in Argentina?
JS: One drawing. A character - an old man. Looks kind of scary because he’s got exaggerated features. I also bought a couple of pieces from this guy. Sebastian. Very talented. So I’m going to see if I can help him.
Virtual Gypsy: Did he have a gallery or was he on the street?
JS: No, just saw him on the street. I want to see if I can help him break into this part of town. I saw a lot of similarities between his work and mine.
Virtual Gypsy: So is this the only trip you’re taking this year or are you going someplace else?
JS: Maybe China? I have a friend who lives there.
Virtual Gypsy: What part? Shanghai?
JS: Yeah, Shanghai. I found tickets for $900. I think that’s a good deal because it’s usually $1,700. Before this trip I went to Bogota. In September I went with 5 guys to Puerto Rico. I like Puerto Rico, it’s fun.
Virtual Gypsy: Did you eat a lot of meat in Argentina?
JS: Chorizo, a lot of entrana…
Virtual Gypsy: Is it hard on the stomach?
JS: Yeah, it’s heavy…the desserts are really good. They had mousse de chocolate and you can add almendras - it’s like amazing. The best dessert I’ve ever had.
Virtual Gypsy: If you were to invest in a company in Argentina, what would it be?
JS: That’s a good question, because what I found was in the markets, they had a lot of trinkets - artisans selling bracelets, rings - absolutely one-of-a-kind and super cheap. You could get furniture for a fraction of the price. I brought a couple of huge cow skins.
Virtual Gypsy: Where are you putting them?
JS: In my living room on the floor. I struggled with the fact that it’s a dead animal, but I figured it was already dead.
Virtual Gypsy: LOL.
JS: I’ve got a dead cow…but it looks good…it’s an organic element that warms up the room…I’m sure a vegetarian that comes to the house would want to go on the other side of the room. If I were to open a business, it would be worldly finds, put them in a huge container and bring them here…mark them up. Now I don’t know what the tariffs and taxes are. Shipping I already got covered. You can get a huge container for $1,000, which is very cheap.
Virtual Gypsy: By water…
JS: Yes. They’re called drop shippers. There’s a lot of possibilities. Wine is dirt cheap. A bottle is $1. Really nice wine from Mendoza, Cordoba. I drank a lot of wine and beer. I saw so many beautiful things, and I haven’t found those things here, so there’s a market here.
Virtual Gypsy: What’s the media like over there? Did you watch any?
JS: I didn’t watch much TV because I was out walking and enjoying. I couldn’t carry a lot of stuff on me. Just tried to put my hands in my pockets. I got a lot of visual memories, a lot of mental notes.
Virtual Gypsy: This is so refreshing, America is so boring.

Hi there,
Thought I’d share something interesting I got hold of recently. If you’re sick and tired of running around totally broke while other players get barns and greenhouses and the most expensive villa, this information is for you.
You’ve probably always wondered why you can’t seem to make as much money or level up as fast as the other players in the game.

This isn’t cheating, the guide just reveals something only a few people know off.

1. Search at the Right Time
Try hunting for fares after midnight; that’s when many airlines reload their computers with the deeply discounted fares that people reserved but didn’t pay for. If you’re only seeking last-minute Web fares, look on airline sites, major booking sites, and aggregator sites (search engines that scour on-line suppliers, consolidators, and booking sites) between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning for tickets for the coming weekend. Such fares usually require that you leave on a Saturday and return on Monday or Tuesday, but some airlines offer Friday departures and Sunday returns.
2. Check a Broad Range of Dates
Travelocity and Orbitz have the most flexible search functions of any of the major booking sites. Travelocity will allow you to search for the lowest round-trip or one-way domestic or international fare within a range of months, which it shows as green dates on a calendar. Even if you are just using Travelocity’s calendar for research, click all the way through an available date; the site frequently shows dates as available when they’re actually sold out. Orbitz will let you search for the lowest price over a weekend you designate; search up to three days before and after your dates; or look for the lowest published fare within a 30-day period. The site recently extended its flexible search option to include international flights, though at press time, it still indicated that the destination airport “must be within 50 U.S. states, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, or Canada.” Expedia’s flexible search provides a pull-down list of 50 popular U.S. destinations only.
3. Use Aggregator Sites
Once you’ve figured out which dates will yield you the best fares, search one of the Web’s “meta” travel agents. Mobissimo searches 85 U.S. and international sources and converts foreign currencies to U.S. dollars. Kayak, which at press time was still being tested, searches 60 sites and allows you to sort airfare results by departure or arrival time. Qixo is a good source for deals from small charter companies and discount airline agencies, as well as major carriers—28 in all. Cheapflights lets you search flexible dates and, like Travelocity, offers a calendar with a range of available dates. Here, too, you should click through the green (available) dates to ensure that the fare you want isn’t sold out. Aggregator sites don’t charge fees themselves, but they might direct you to a site that does.
4. Book Award Tickets Early—and On-line
Since airlines allocate only a small percentage of their seats for award travel, it’s smart to book months in advance. Just to be safe, book 330 days in advance—when most airlines load award fares. Also, reserve those seats on-line: American, Northwest, and Continental all charge $5 for booking award travel over the phone and $10 for doing it in person—but nothing for on-line reservations. (United charges more to book award travel by phone than to book paid tickets by phone: $15 versus $5.) If you do get lucky and are able to reserve an award seat only a week or two before you travel, unfortunately you could get slapped with a high “expediting fee.” For instance, Delta charges $50 within two weeks of travel; Continental charges non-elite frequent fliers $75 for booking within three days of flying (elites pay $50).
5. Book Through an Airline’s Web Site
If you’ve found the same low fare on an on-line booking agent like Orbitz and an airline’s own Web site, it makes more sense to reserve on the latter to avoid paying the $10 or so service fee booking sites now charge. By booking on an airline’s site, you’ll also avoid the service fees the airlines themselves have begun to charge: $5 for booking over the phone, and $5 to $10 for booking at ticket offices and airport counters.
6. Don’t Pay Too Much for Change Fees
If there’s a chance that you’ll need to change your flight, book directly with the airline. Orbitz and Travelocity (but not Expedia) charge a $30 fee to change a flight, which is on top of the $100 change fee the airlines assess. Low-cost airlines have much lower change fees. JetBlue charges $20 ($25 on the phone) plus the fare difference, Song charges $25 plus the fare difference, and Southwest has never had a fee—it charges only the difference in fare. But there’s some good news from the major airlines: in January, Delta decreased its change fee to $50 from $100. And though the other major airlines hadn’t followed suit when this went to press, we expect they will.

So I got a new computer in the middle of October, it is a Toshiba Satellite A500/040, came with Windows vista Home premium. I got a Windows 7 upgrade disc that is only for my computer. I have upgraded my Laptop to windows 7 and am now having troubles… I think I picked up a few viruses and I am wanting to re-install windows to get my laptop back to normal. The only problem is I am not entirely sure if I can re-use the Upgrade disc. Does anyone know if I can? And if not, what I can do? Thanks in advance for any help and have a great New Year

Long time lurker, thought I would say hello! I really dont post much but thanks for the good times I have here. Love this place..
When I was hurt in that boat accident my life would be changed forever. Unfortunately that driver had no car insurance and I was going to be hurting for ever.
This was not time for me to start and guess what to do. I had to find a good personal injury attorney to help me get what I needed. After all, my family was counting on me.
How terrible was it? I has bedridden for 4 months, I had to have constant care and my clinic bills went through the roof!
Gratefully, I found a good referral site to help me.
I will post more later this period to tell you more about what I have been going through.

Dentistry caries and periodontal condition could be prevented by a successful dentist hygiene program. A great dentistry hygiene program need to include the following:
1. Proper typical tooth brushing strategies.
2. Right eating habits and excellent diet.
3. The use of fluoride water and other fluoride-containing substances like toothpastes and mouthwashes.
4. Regular visits on the dentist including a thorough dentistry check-up and prophylaxis.
All these can supply optimum oral wellness, free from dentistry caries and periodontal condition.
A well balanced diet and also the limited consumption of meals that contribute to dentist decay are the very first measures to some successful dental hygiene software. Our mouth is naturally inhabited by acid forming bacteria. These bacteria feed on starches and sugars. Acid is formed when bacteria act on starch or sugar. The acid formed causes enamel degradation, which would be the starting point of any dentist caries. For this reason, it is crucial to minimize and if feasible, avoid meals which are rich in sugar and starch. Examples of these meals are richly filled pastries, doughnuts and peanut butter. These meals are particularly harmful due to the fact these tend to stick inside tooth surfaces. Sweetened canned fruits with heavy syrup, citrus-flavored candies and sweetened fruit juices are also high in sugar content. Chewing gums, breath sweeteners and carbonated beverages are damaging not since they contain huge amounts of sugar but due to the fact from the frequency with which they are ingested. Artificially sweetened meals, drinks and chewing gum are better alternatives.
Standard brushing from the teeth using the right methods would be the next step in following a great dentist hygiene program. It really is advised to brush the teeth two or three times a day but if you’re keen on keeping to some very good dental hygiene system, it really is constantly greater to brush immediately after every meal and soon after taking any meal in among. A great brushing method will take away the meals particles lodged in between the teeth and from the natural pits and fissures from the chewing surfaces of the teeth. This may also get rid of the plaque that sticks on the teeth surfaces. Removing the foodstuff particles will also prevent foul breath or halitosis. Halitosis, even so, may also be caused by several other factors which includes a badly decayed tooth, eating particular kinds of meals like garlic and onions and infections in the tonsils, sinuses or throat. Applying dental floss to take out meals particles trapped in concerning the teeth is also a incredibly essential part of a great dentist hygiene package. Dental floss can take away food particles lodged in concerning the teeth that sometimes even a fantastic tooth brushing technique can’t accomplish. Should you require support with any with the tactics listed above, please contact us at any time as we’d be happy to suggest a local Portland Dentist, or a different one closer to you.
Sometimes ill fitting, old and worn out dental appliances like dentures, orthodontic appliances and bridges is usually the source of gum irritation. These tooth appliances should also be taken cared of in the similar method to normal teeth. All removable dentist appliances must be eliminated right after every meal or snack and really should be cleaned having a special brush. Don’t let meals particles accumulate in these appliances. Rinse the appliance with running h2o when it truly is impossible to clean it thoroughly with a brush to ensure that food particles might be eliminated. Soak the appliance overnight once or twice a week in a remedy of sodium hypochlorite. This alternative helps remove stains on the tooth appliance.
The use of fluoride drinking water is an additional crucial factor in maintaining beneficial dentist hygiene. Most U.S. drinking water systems right now are already treated with fluoride. It has been observed that the use h2o treated with the proper amount of fluoride can really aid stop dentistry caries. Fluoride is found to strengthen the enamel. Fluoride can also be topically applied towards the teeth to kids ages 13 and below. There are also toothpastes and mouthwashes readily available inside market right now that contains fluoride.
The last step in maintaining beneficial oral hygiene would be the normal visits towards the dentist. This ought to begin around the age of three. A visit towards the dentist following each and every six months is suggested. Your dentist will have all the knowledge on how you’ll be able to preserve great oral hygiene. He or she is going to be able to recommend to you any actions or procedures essential to keep and continue enjoying excellent dentist wellness.

Hi,
First just let me say I’m new to this and this is my first time using the software. I also apologize if I’m posting in the wrong forum or if this question has already been asked.
I have an .mkv file (it’s the Lion King movie) and I am trying to convert it to DVD so I can burn it onto a disk and play in my dvd player. I renamed the file so it is simpled called “lionking.mkv”. However when I load the file in AVI2DVD it does not seem to register my file because nothing comes up under film information, it all just remains at 0 and there are no audio streams. As far as I can tell there is nothing wrong with this file, it plays fine on my computer and for all the other steps it works ok..like taking a screen snapshot for the menu, it will play fine in there and there is audio. This has been taking me all night trying to figure out how to get this file onto a dvd and I’m about ready to give up..I really don’t want to have to download yet another software to do it!
Thanks,
Rose
